App Store & Google Play app icon sizes

Almost every rejected icon comes down to one of two things: the wrong pixel dimensions, or transparency left in the iOS icon. Get those two right and the rest is easy — you just export each size the App Store and Google Play ask for, and every one is listed below.

The short version

In practice, you only make three icons:

  • 1024 × 1024iOS icon. Drop it into Xcode and it makes every smaller size for you.
  • 512 × 512Google Play icon. Uploaded straight to the Play Console.
  • 432 × 432Android adaptive icon. A foreground and a background layer that the phone masks to its own shape. Android specs it as 108 dp (density-independent pixels); in practice you export each layer at 432 × 432 px.

Keep every icon square, and don’t round the corners yourself (the stores do that for you). Don’t leave any transparency in the iOS 1024.

iOS app icon sizes

You design just one 1024 × 1024 px marketing icon, and Xcode renders the on-device sizes below from it. Each value is the pixel size for that point size and screen scale.

iOS app icon requirements

  • 1024 × 1024 PNG in sRGB, no transparency
  • Ship a plain square — Apple masks it into the rounded squircle for you
  • One source icon; Xcode generates every other size

Google Play app icon sizes

Upload one 512 × 512 icon to the Play Console for your store listing. Inside the app you ship an adaptive icon, and Android Studio renders it at each screen density below, so you don’t export these by hand.

Screen densityAdaptive icon layer (px)
xxxhdpi (4×)432 × 432
xxhdpi (3×)324 × 324
xhdpi (2×)216 × 216
hdpi (1.5×)162 × 162
mdpi (1×)108 × 108

Phones older than Android 8 fall back to legacy square icons (48 to 192 px). Android Studio generates those too.

How the adaptive icon works

An adaptive icon is two full-bleed layers on a 108 dp canvas. The phone masks them to its own shape, so only the middle is guaranteed to show.

108 dp canvas66 dp safe zone
  • 108 dp canvas

Foreground and background both fill the full square. The outer 18 dp on each edge can be cropped by the mask or used for motion effects.

  • 66 dp safe zone

Keep your logo and any critical detail inside this central circle, so no mask shape clips it.

  • Monochrome layer

Android 13+ tints a single-color silhouette of your foreground to match the user’s wallpaper. Supply one so your themed icon isn’t a blank square.

That safe zone matters because Android phones each crop your icon differently. Here’s the same icon on four common launchers:

Circle
Squircle
Rounded square
Teardrop

Android app icon requirements

  • 512 × 512 32-bit PNG for the Play listing, ≤ 1024 KB
  • Adaptive icon: 108 dp layers, keep detail in the 66 dp safe zone
  • Add a monochrome layer for Android 13+ themed icons

App icon size FAQ

What size should an app icon be?+

For the iOS App Store, make one 1024 × 1024 px icon, and Xcode generates every smaller size from it. For Google Play, make a 512 × 512 px icon plus an adaptive icon (108 × 108 dp foreground and background layers). Those three assets cover both stores.

What is the App Store app icon size?+

1024 × 1024 pixels, as a flattened PNG in the sRGB color space with no transparency (no alpha channel) and no rounded corners, since Apple applies the rounding. This is the marketing icon Xcode uses to generate the on-device sizes.

Do I need to export every iOS icon size?+

No. Since Xcode 14 you can supply one 1024 × 1024 icon in a single-size app icon set and Xcode produces the notification, settings, Spotlight, and home-screen sizes automatically. The full table is a reference for non-Xcode workflows.

What size is the Google Play app icon?+

512 × 512 pixels, as a 32-bit PNG (alpha allowed), no larger than 1024 KB. Google Play applies its own mask, so keep key detail away from the corners.

What is the Android adaptive icon size?+

The full canvas is 108 × 108 dp with separate foreground and background layers. Keep all key content inside the central 66 dp safe zone, since the outer margin can be cropped by different device mask shapes (circle, squircle, rounded square, teardrop). For Android 13+, also supply a monochrome layer for themed icons.

Can an app icon have transparency?+

The iOS App Store marketing icon must be fully opaque, with no alpha channel. The Google Play icon is a 32-bit PNG and may use transparency. In both cases, avoid pre-rounding the corners; the stores mask the icon for you.
